Most of us spend our lives in pursuit of happiness through the things we achieve and the things we acquire.

But even then, we’re not necessarily happy.

Oh, there are fleeting moments, sure. But they don’t last. For the most part, we stress ourselves out, we go into debt, we put in our 9-to-5 year after year, only to end up worrying all the time about losing what we’ve struggled so hard to attain.

Why is true happiness so elusive?

One big reason why is that we have the idea of happiness upside down and backwards.

We think we have to have the right circumstances (job, relationship, friends, house, money) in order to be happy and love ourselves and our lives.

But the truth is, we don’t.

That’s because it’s completely possible to be a genuinely happy person WITHOUT all those “trappings.”

In fact, most genuinely happy people don’t NEED anything outside of the basics to feel utterly in love with their lives.

How do I know?

I’ve studied and interviewed some of the world’s happiest people, from all over the world.

Most were not wealthy.

They didn’t have the perfect body.

They weren’t necessarily married. Or sometimes even in a romantic relationship.

Some had okay careers, some just had jobs that paid the bills.

A few were well known, but most were unknown.

Fame wasn’t even something these happy people desired or thought about.

So if the world’s happiest people weren’t spending 99% of their time pursuing happiness through achievement, success, upward mobility, acquisition or material wealth, HOW were they managing to be so happy?

Because they had certain skills.

These skills enabled them to love themselves and their lives without having to “work” so hard at it, day in and day out. They would wake up happy and go to bed happy, because their happiness didn’t depend on their external circumstances.

AND—the happier they were, the more good things they attracted in life: love, opportunities, a wonderful community of friends.

These good things only underscored their already-positive state of mind.

Happiness begets happiness.

Their skills are why they are happy, not the stuff they own or things they’ve accomplished.

Their secret was their skills. Skills that anyone can learn in order to be truly happy, too.
