How to Thrive Emotionally and Physically During the COVID-19 Crisis

This is a stressful, frightening time for many of us because we’re worried about what will happen during this COVID-19 epidemic. Will we contract the virus and get seriously ill? Will we lose our job? What if we already did? Will our loved ones be okay? Will we get through this?

If there’s one piece of advice I could give right now, it’s this:

Please be kind and gentle with yourself.

When you’re allowing your thoughts to spin, and start getting tense, anxious, or even freaking out, it’s important to recognize that this is your wounded self scaring you.

It’s very important to not allow your wounded self to take over at a time like this, because stress will erode your immune system. You need to protect your immune system now more than ever.

How to Soothe Your Inner Child and Relieve Anxiety

How do you soothe those jittery feelings when you watch the news or start to go through the “what if” scenarios in your mind?

Start by acknowledging to yourself that this is a challenging time—for everyone. It’s okay to feel scared. Imagine that your intention is to soothe and calm a scared child, rather than further scaring the child. How would you speak to this sacred child? Speak to yourself in the same way.

Another way to lessen anxiety is to stay open to your higher guidance in order to bring comfort and compassion to your inner child. What is that higher guidance telling you about what’s happening right now?

I’m reminded of one of my favorite books, “Man’s Search For Meaning,” by Dr. Viktor Frankl, who was able to stay alive in a concentration camp by listening to his inner knowing. This is a very important time to listen to your inner knowing regarding what is safe for you and what isn’t.

It’s important to stay distant from others right now, you can still make time to connect with them through video chats (Zoom, Skype, FaceTime) or regular phone calls. Connecting like this will make you feel supported and less alone.

How to Stay Strong and Safe Physically

The first way to stay responsible and safe physically at this time is to wash your hands; go out as little as possible; wear gloves when going to the market if there is contamination in your area; order essentials to be delivered; avoid physical social contact; and get enough exercise.

The other way is to strengthen your immune system, and that means addressing the underlying causes of a weak immune system: Stress. A poor diet. Lack of exercise and no time in nature.

Even if you need to stay near home, try to spend time outdoors. Nature and sunshine have antiviral qualities that can support your health.

The food you eat can contribute to a weakened immune system. If you’ve been eating fast food, processed food, sugar, and factory-farmed food, please consider trying your best to eat real food. This is food your great, great grandparents would have eaten.

Consider that indigenous people rarely got cancer, heart disease, diabetes, auto-immune disease, or viruses. Why is that? It’s because they didn’t have access to fast food or food from boxes or packages. They didn’t eat food produced in a factory. Their food wasn’t sprayed with pesticides and grown on devitalized soils. They ate meats that hadn’t been contaminated with hormones, and food that has not been altered with GMOs. with chemicals, GMOs, preservatives.

Indigenous people ate a traditional diet, and that meant whole, organic food.

What I Recommend You Read Right Now

I recommend you read The Food Fix by Mark Hyman, M.D.

This book will explain how our dysfunctional and contaminated food system is one of the greatest underlying causes of our current planetary problems—including climate change, an overwhelmed healthcare system, and mass extinction of plants and animals. Humanity itself may be in danger of extinction if we don’t start to heal our food system.

It IS possible to improve your immune system and transform your health, and it doesn’t need to take long.

Why not begin today?

Go through your cupboards and refrigerator and throw out sugars, processed foods, industrial seed oils (such as safflower, sunflower, canola, corn, etc.), processed dairy, and factory-farmed foods and replace them with organic, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, pastured or grass-fed meats and eggs.

Think of the way people ate in the 1800s and eat accordingly, and you will be showing up as a loving adult to physically take care of your inner child.

Use this time to take loving care of yourself and you’ll find yourself flourishing when all this is behind us.

Blessings,

Margaret Paul
